Candidates selected through the written entrance examination and through the JRF channel are required to take a minimum of five courses (including Research Courses if prescribed) in the first two semesters. Satisfactory completion of the Pre-Ph.D. course work (according to the JNU Ordinances) is prerequisite for confirmation in the Ph.D. programme. Suitable courses may also be prescribed for candidates admitted through the Direct channel.

The detailed syllabus of the M.Sc. programme is available from the School. The salient features of the syllabus are: (a) emphasis on core aspects of modern physics, and (b) emphasis on laboratory training and modern electronics. Besides being a terminal degree at the Master’s level, the programme is viewed as an integral part of the research programme of the School.
