Centre of Russian Studies is a Centre of excellence for the study of Russian Language, Literature and Culture.

Courses of Study: At present the Centre offers BA (Hons.), MA, M.Phil. and Ph.D programmes in Russian studies.

B.A.(Hons.) in Russian: The programme is spread over six semesters. During this period a student has to earn 71 credits in Core courses in Russian Language, Literature and Translation and 4 credits in Tool Courses on Culture and Civilisation of Russia which are all compulsory courses. Besides, the student has to earn credits in optional and tool courses as prescribed by the School. For Core courses the contact hours in the Centre vary from 16 to 20 hours per week. A distinguishing feature of the process of teaching is the use of audio-video materials for this purpose. As far as possible native Russian Speakers are also involved in the teaching work.

M.A. in Russian: The Master’s Programme is spread over four semesters. During the period a student is required to earn 80 credits in Core Courses. While most of the courses are compulsory, for some cases there is choice between Language, Literature and Translation courses offered by the Centre. The number of contact hours per week at this level is 20. A mini dissertation has to be written in the final semester. The courses offered are on practical Russian, Folklore and Ancient Russian Literature, Russian literature of 17th - 20th Century, Theory of Literature, Lexicology, Syntax, Morphology, Linguistics, Translation of Social Science and Scientific and Technical Materials, Theory of Translation and Russian-English as well as English-Russian Interpretation.

M.Phil. / Ph.D. in Russian: M.Phil/Ph.D programme at the Centre consists of Course Work and a dissertation for M.Phil. and a thesis for Ph.D. For the M.Phil. programme, of the four courses required to be completed in first two semesters, the course on Research Methodology is compulsory. The other three courses are to be chosen from a range of optional courses offered each year. The dissertation is to be written in the second year of the M.Phil programme. The programme of course work for the M.Phil comprises of a combination of lectures, the preparation and presentation of papers and the participation in group discussion.

Note :-
Entrance Examination for B.A. IInd year, M.A. and M.Phil. shall be conducted in the Russian language.
