The Centre of Linguistics and English(CLE) offers postgraduate programmes (MA) in Linguistics, and in English, and integrated, interdisciplinary programmes of research (M. Phil/Ph. D) in the areas that encompass and radiate from the two disciplines. The Centre also plays a pivotal role in the School, offering optional courses in Linguistics, Language, and Literature to undergraduate students majoring in foreign languages.

The MA programme in Linguistics gives students grounding in the basics of descriptive and general linguistics and then initiates them into the areas of Applied Linguistics, South Asian Language Typology, Cognitive Linguistics and Language-Mind-Brain Studies, Sociolinguistics, Indian Linguistic Traditions, and the Semiotics of Language. The programme is so designed as to train the students in the practical and research aspects of the discipline as well, so that they explore and test current linguistic theories.

The MA programme in English lays emphasis on non-British literatures in English – Indian, African, Australian, American, and Canadian, even while it introduces students to new ways of looking at canonical British literature. Courses on literary criticism and literary theories help the students to develop the ability to relate the literatures to their context, to compare theories and texts, and to explore the way history, ideology, and material forces condition literary and other cultural texts.

The M.Phil/ Ph. D programme at CLE is a rich and rewarding research programme that allows students to explore all areas of cultural studies. Hence, the research programme is open to postgraduates from many disciplines. This allows for considerable interdisciplinary intellectual interaction. The following areas of research have seen impressive work at the centre: Descriptive Linguistics, including phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic studies of major Indian as well as Tribal and other lesser-known Indian languages with a thrust on Areal Typology, General Linguistics, Neuro-Cognitive Linguistics, Sign Linguistics, Semiotics, Applied Linguistics including Language Pedagogy and Speech & Language Pathology, Sociolinguistics, Speech Sciences, Philosophy of Language, Indian Literary and Grammatical Theories, Translation Studies, Indian Literatures including Indian English, African Literature, Canadian Literature, Australian Literature, American Literature, Literature of the Indian Diaspora, Theatre, Performance Studies, Twentieth Century British Literature, Literary and Cultural Theories, Comparative Literature, and English in India.
