JNU School of International Studies - Courses

1. Centre for American and West European Studies

The Centre for American and West European Studies comprises of four streams:

i) American Studies   ii) West European Studies   iii) Latin American Studies   iv) Canadian Studies   

The Centre offers inter-disciplinary courses at the M.A., M.Phil. / Ph.D. level on United States, Latin American and Carribean countries, Canada and West Europe. The Centre's thrust areas include foreign and security policies, regional integration processes, economic development strategies, political processes including structures and movements, and issues related to multiculturalism and ethnicity. Subjects and themes relevant to the Indian context and developmental context of the third world in general, some time with comparative focus, are also emphasized upon in the study and research activities of the Centre.

2. Centre for Studies in Diplomacy, International Law and Economics

The Centre has three distinct divisions, Economics Division, Diplomatic Studies Division and International Law. The International Legal Studies Division consists of specialists in International Law, Trade Law, Law of International Organisation, International Environmental Law and Human Rights Law, International Air and Space Law. The Diplomatic Studies Division's major thrust areas are Environmental Negotiations, Business Negotiations, Media and Diplomacy and Indian Diplomacy and another area of interest is Negotiations Theory. Both International Law and Diplomatic Studies Divisions offer M.Phil / Ph.D. programmes. The Economics Division attempts to provide a strong foundation for theoretical and empirical economic analysis. The division concentrates on thrust areas such as International Economics, Economic Development, Finance, Environmental Economics, Industrial Organisation and Econometrics. It offers M.Phil / Ph.D programme in Economics and an M.A. in Economics (with specialization in World Economy).

3. Centre for East Asian Studies

The Centre for East Asian Studies is one of the seven Centres of the School of International Studies. Initially established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, subsequently it grew to include Korean Studies as well. The teaching and research gamut covers the entire aspects of modern and contemporary East Asia. Their background covers broadly Social Science discipline : History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology and some have entered after M.A. in Japanese language. Several students of the Centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by the Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Govt. of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, Fellowships from Chinese Government. Besides students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

4. Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament

The Centre runs four M.Phil Programmes in (i) International Politics, (ii) International Organization, (iii) Disarmament and (iv) Political Geography.

The focus of the Centre’s research activities has evolved over the years, as per the emerging concerns in the arena of world affairs. For long, major themes like nonalignment, North-South dialogue, the quest for new international economic order, national liberation movements, development and disarmament were prominent. Lately, globalization, peacekeeping, revolution in military affairs, sustainable development and environmental security are among students’ research interests.

5. Centre for Russian, Central Asian and East European Studies

The Centre works in close co-operation with policy makers and larger academic community. Regular seminars and conferences are also organised by the Centre in order to bring together a wide range of expertise and to exchange views on subjects studied by the faculty and the research scholars. In recognition of its high quality academic and research programme, University Grants Commission has accorded the Centre the status of an Advanced Centre of Russian and Central Asian Area Studies in India. Other areas of research and teaching in the Centre are Central and Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Baltic Republics. History, Politics, Economy and Society of these areas are studied in an inter-disciplinary manner.

6. Centre for South, Central, South-east Asian & South-west Pacific Studies

The Centre for South, Central, Southeast Asia and Southwest Pacific Studies has been quite active in its research and teaching on aspects of various divisions of the South Asia including SAARC Studies, Central Asia including Mongolia, Afghanistan, Xinjiang and Tibet and Southeast Asia & Southwest Pacific Studies. All the academic activities including teaching and research have been designed to objectively study and analyse history, politics, societies, economics and contemporary developments in different regions/countries covered under the Centres purview of study and research. Different Divisions of the Centre have been able to produce a large number of M.Phils and Ph.Ds covering almost all spheres of life in different countries of this vast region. The Centre has been offering courses both at M.A. level and M.Phil levels and has developed itself into a Centre of academic excellence in the fields of South Asian, Central Asian and South East Asian and South-West Pacific Studies.

7. Centre for West Asian and Afican Studies

The Centre for West Asian and African Studies consists of two divisions, namely, West Asian and North African Division and sub-Saharan Division. It is a multidisciplinary Centre in the School.

In 1978, as part of the Area Studies Programme of the UGC, the Gulf Studies Programme (GSP) was established. The GSP focuses on the countires of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Iran, Iraq and Yemen. With the help and support of ICCR and MEA, the Nelson Mandela Chair for sub-Saharan Africa was established in 1992. Since then, renowned scholars from South Africa have annually held the Chair and are spending a semester at the Centre. The Sub Saharan division of the Centre has focused research activities on Francophone Countries and issues related to Indian Diaspora.

The faculty members of the Centre offer MA as well as M.Phil. / Ph.D. courses and they include foreign policy, political, economic and social systems pertaining to the region.
