Hans Raj College is one of the largest constituent colleges of the University of Delhi that has been imparting rigorous, value-based education for more than 50 years now. It is a premier, multi-faculty institution with highly qualified academicians, imparting quality education in their respective fields. The College today enjoys high reputation at national level for its outstanding performance in academics, sports and extracurricular activities, and duly attracts students from all over the country and even abroad.
In the last five decades of its progressive existence, the College has aimed at providing its students with the best possible learning experience while they work towards their degree courses. The College has always focused on achieving all round growth of its students, and has striven hard to bring out the best in everyone who enters its portal of learning ! In pursuance of this goal, the College has built up an impressive infrastructure and employs some of the best minds in their respective fields as faculty.
The College was founded on July 26, 1948, by the D.A.V. College Managing Committee in the sacred memory of Mahatma Hans Raj, the founder Principal of D.A.V. College, Lahore, and a pioneer in the field of education. The College started amidst the modest environs of the D.A.V. Higher Secondary School, Chitragupta Road, New Delhi and shifted to its present sprawling campus on October 3, 1954.
Though things have changed with times, the original charter of governance of 'Hans Raj College' states one of the objectives of the Governing Body as, "to arrange and provide for liberal as well as vocational education of the University standard; to encourage the study of Sanskrit and Hindi and to provide facilities for research work in Ancient History and Culture of Vedic Religion and to do any such act or acts as are conducive to the above subjects".
Being an extended college, Hans Raj has more than 3000 students on its rolls, and the daily college schedule therefore extends till quite late in the afternoon. Also, apart from Geography, Political Science, and Sociology, Hans Raj offers undergraduate courses in a maximum number of disciplines as compared to any other affiliated colleges of the University of Delhi.
The College is located at the southern edge of the University Campus (bounded in the north by Mall Road) close to the popular local avenue called Bungalow Road and Sri Ram Institute of Industrial Research. For vehicular traffic the College is easily and directly approached from the I.S.B.T. through the ridge road. There is no need to go to Mall Road or the University Campus first to reach the College. There are also direct roads to the College from the Clock Tower, as also from the Tis Hazari Courts. Visitors are required to park their vehicles just outside the College, only staff cars being permitted in the inner parking lot.
