Study of a Genre: Shorter Narrative Forms

Study of various shorter narrative forms such as Exemplum, I Fiori, I Bestiari, Novella, Fiaba, Favola, Leggende, Frammenti, Aneddoto, Racconto etc. Suggested authors: Boccaccio, Marco Polo and II Milone, Sacchetti, Svevo, Pirandello, Buzzati, Bontempelli, Landolfi, Manzini, Moravia, Rodari, Calvino, etc.

Themes and Strategies in Italian Literature [1]

Study of particular themes along with the narrative, cultural, ideological strategies involved. Readings would be suggested by the Department on the basis of the theme chosen.*

A selection of representative authors from the 18th century till the present day. Suggested authors: Verri, Manzoni, Verga, Nievo, Pirandello, Svevo, Gadda, Pasolini, Pavese, Vittorini, Pratolini, Moravia, Morante, Silone, Cassola, Ginzburg, Manzini, Landolfi, Bontempelli, Malerba, Calvino, Eco, Sciascia, D’Arrigo, Bufalino, etc.

Themes and Strategies in Italian Literature [2]

Study of particular themes along with the narrative, cultural, ideological strategies involved. Readings would be suggested by the Department on the basis of the theme chosen.*

Language of the Media

Study of newspaper and TV reporting, analysis of films.

Cultural History of Italy [1]

The major social movements and their reflection in literature and the arts.

Introduction to Linguistics

Nature and structure of language, language acquisition, language and society, language and literature, historical development of language, sound system and grammar, dialects, standard language, literary speech.

Translation: Theory and Practice [1]

Study of the principles of translation, contrastive syntactical structures (Italian/English), translation of specific text types (Italian/English, English/Italian).

* Themes dealt with so far: India and Europe, Romanticism and Modernity, Literature and Exile, Fin-desiecle, Literature and Anthropology, Literature and Globalisation, Literature and Industry, Literature and War, Autobiography. This year’s theme would be Literature and Travel.
