Study of the Genre: Shorter Narrative Forms

Study of various shorter narrative forms such as Novelle, Erzählung, Kurzgeschichte, Märchen, Fabel, Sage, etc. Suggested authors: Goethe, the Grimm Brothers, Heinrich von Kleist, Gottfried Keller, Theodor Storm, Robert Musil, Franz Kafka and postwar writers.

Themes and Strategies in German Literature [1]

Study of particular themes along with the narrative, cultural, ideological strategies involved. Readings would be suggested by the Department on the basis of the theme chosen.*

Study of a Genre: Novel

A selection of representative authors from Goethe till the contemporary period. Suggested authors: Goethe, the Romantics, Theodor Fontane, Thomas Mann, Alfred Döblin, Hermann, Hesse, Anna Seghers, Heinrich Böll, Günter Grass, Christa Wolf, Hubert Fichte.

Study of newspaper and TV reporting, analysis of films.

Cultural History of the German-speaking Countries [1]

The major social movements and their reflection in literature and the arts.

Introduction to Linguistics

Nature and structure of language, language acquisition, language and society, language and literature, historical development of language, sound system and grammar, dialects, standard language, literary speech

Translation: Theory and Practice [1]

Study of the principles of translation, contrastive syntactical structure (German/English), translation of specific text types (German/English, English/German).

* Themes dealt with so far: India and Europe, Romanticism and Modernity, Literature and Exile, Finde- siecle, Literature and Anthropology, Literature and Globalisation, Literature and Industry, Literature and War, Autobiography. This year’s theme would be Literature and Travel.
